The Opportunity

Nuclear Decommissioning

POCO Rad Waste D.I Lead. Multiple locations to include; Barnwood - Gloucester, East Kilbride - Glasgow, Hunterston - North Ayrshire, Heysham - Lancashire, Hartlepool - County Durham or Hinkley B - Somerset. When nuclear stations reach the end of their generating capability they move into the next phase of their lives, which is to remove the fuel and to prepare for decommissioning.

An exciting opportunity has been created to lead the technical support and intelligent customer oversight for decommissioning waste management for the EDF Energy nuclear fleet, ensuring safe and reliable waste management in accordance with all licenses, regulatory bodies, company business strategies and industry best practices. The Post Operational Clean Out (POCO Radioactive Waste Lead is a pinnacle opportunity within Waste and Decommissioning.

The Person

The role requires a pragmatic leader to provide Governance of processes, standards and best practices;

Provision of authoritative advice, to ensure safe, efficient and reliable defuelling and decommissioning, aligned with NDA goals and waste management best practice
Propose and steer appropriate SQEP input to the waste management strategy and delivery of work for AGRs/SZB
Advise on technical governance requirements and guidance, providing support to demonstrate compliance and assess non-conformances
Participates in external forums to benchmark industry best practice and developments in own discipline.
Sets standards to enable stations to Operate with Decommissioning in mind, ensuring operational practices do not unnecessarily cause an increase to decommissioning activities

Oversight of fleet effectiveness
Present the status of the effectiveness of the waste management program, including areas of concern/excellent to Senior Leadership
Responsible for ensuring that best practices are sought and used, innovative techniques are utilised where possible, identifying and mitigating risk and keeping stakeholders informed.
Use the relevant company processes (e.g. Corrective Action Process, Operating Experience, Feedback, Self-Assessment, and Training) to identify improvements to procedures and processes that will drive improved performance. Implement where necessary
Support recovery activities when required
Acts as a pragmatic technical conscience
Represent, lead and influence decision making

Oversight of investment and lifetime planning
Responsible for scoping and defining the work plan for the full waste management lifecycle.
Challenge, determining the correct work included and providing advice to inform station implementation.
Responsible for ensuring that the waste management strategy, plans and implementation of delivery is efficient, appropriate and timely.
Take an active role in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of team business plans and budgets, working with others to satisfy business objectives.

Maximise effective use of time and personal ability, working flexibly within own range of competence, to ensure maximum contribution towards achieving business need, Undertaking and supporting training and development activities to extend skills and abilities of self and others.
Behave in accordance with EDF competencies for team members and team leaders.
Provides oversight and challenge to the maintenance and development of technical resources and skills in their discipline area across decommissioning requirements

The Skills

The post holder will be qualified to degree level in a relevant engineering, scientific or mathematics discipline.

The post holder will normally be a Chartered Engineer or be professionally qualified and is expected to continue professional development.

Specific Skills

  • An extensive knowledge in own technical area and the ability to provide authoritative advice to others
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety and site licence condition requirements. Good knowledge of engineering, design, safety case and nuclear facility operations is advantageous
  • Knowledge of decommissioning regulatory requirements and liabilities management is advantageous
  • Some experience in a technical oversight role is desirable
