Are you interested in helping to shape a holistic approach to environmental protection in Wales? If so, this could be role for you.

The Welsh Government is seeking to appoint an experienced specialist in environmental law to oversee the Interim Environmental Protection Assessment process in Wales.

This role will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to provide any individual, private company or other organisation with the ability to raise concerns about implementation of, and compliance with, environmental legislation.

In overseeing the interim complaints process, the Interim Assessor will have a key role in evaluating the process, helping to shape the permanent approach to environmental governance in Wales.

The Interim Assessor will oversee the receipt of complaints relating to environmental law submitted through an online complaints system. They will be responsible for the review of complaints and in conjunction with experts in the field, the determining their seriousness and urgency.

A key responsibility will be to ensure all complaints are recorded, reported and prepared for transfer to the permanent environmental governance arrangement when established. For serious complaints which require urgent attention, the Interim Assessor will escalate matters.

The role requires an adept ability to evaluate complex evidence within a short time frame, coming to a reasoned conclusion on the severity of a complaint. Central to the role is the need for the Assessor to exercise judgement with due consideration to the legislative framework of environmental law in Wales, including the principles enshrined within the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act 2015.

Crucially, for areas requiring further expertise, you will be expected to liaise with other experts in the field. Therefore, excellent communication skills and an ability to network are vital.

The location of the role is flexible and will be confirmed upon appointment.
