Appointment of 3 Senior Board posts

Location: Central belt, Scotland, with some meetings to be held virtually

Closing date: 7 September 2020 


A Chair and two Board Members are being sought by Scottish Ministers to join Environmental Standards Scotland. This is a new, independent public body being established to help Scotland uphold high environmental standards.


Environmental Standards Scotland will be responsible for making sure that public bodies in Scotland correctly apply environmental law, and that environmental law in Scotland is effective in protecting nature and our wellbeing.


It will be set up on a non-statutory basis from January 2021, transitioning to a statutory, fully-independent body, later in the year.


Chair - Daily rate £300

The Chair will be the first leader of Environmental Standards Scotland and will play the key role in establishing the organisation and setting the tone of its future relationship with the Scottish Parliament, public institutions and the people of Scotland.


The role requires strong strategic leadership and ability develop positive relationships and influence at very senior levels.  It is likely that you will already have a reputation for leading the set-up of a new organisation or board, with a strong understanding of corporate governance needs and a track record of leading strategic investigations with objectivity.


Board Members – Daily rate £200

The two initial Board members will play a fundamental role in helping to shape the approach of Environmental Standards Scotland to its monitoring, investigation, research and enforcement roles. They will have a unique opportunity to influence the future direction of environmental governance in Scotland.


The successful candidates will bring their environmental legal knowledge and their abilities to evaluate complex sources of information and deliver sound judgments to the core work of Environmental Standards Scotland. It is likely that you will already have a reputation for your capacity to take a holistic view of strategic environmental issues, based on a strong evidence base, be adept at building positive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholder and be highly skilled at communicating complex information with impact.


For these role, whatever your background, you will bring integrity; objectivity; sound judgment and openness. You will also demonstrate the flexibility needed to support a new organisation, contributing to its development into a trusted and highly effective new governance body for Scotland.
