OPRED Environmental Management Lead
The remit of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is far-reaching and spectacularly interesting. The Department’s work extends from generating business opportunities for the UK and promoting competitive market initiatives, to ensuring there is a reliable and clean energy system and addressing climate change issues. As such, our people have the chance to do something beneficial for the nation with their unique skills and knowledge. And as a senior member of the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED), you could be at the heart of helping to tackle one of our most pressing climate challenges.
The Offshore Environment Unit (OEU) sits within OPRED. We are the team responsible for developing and monitoring the environmental regulatory regime relating to offshore energy initiatives – and we are at a vital point in our development. Following on from the Government’s commitment to bring greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, we have an ambitious target to meet. As such, we will look to you to take the technical lead across a team of 17 environmental specialists, developing achievable, progressive and sustainable decarbonisation policies. Acting as OEU’s technical subject matter expert on environmental legislation and core regulatory functions, you will work with high profile customers and stakeholders including cross-Government colleagues, Ministers and senior industry figures, representing OPRED both domestically and internationally, and sharing knowledge on gas and oil-related environmental issues that are of national importance.
To be equal to this varied and fast-paced role, you will be qualified to a minimum of degree level in a relevant science, engineering or environmental subject, backed up by good technical knowledge. While experience in the oil and gas industries would be useful, so to is significant experience in environmental regulation or operational delivery in a role that is relevant to the offshore energy sector. Adept at solving problems quickly and efficiently, you will have exceptional communication and influencing skills.
