Senior Energy Adviser
Shape our knowledge of the energy sector
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is committed to supporting British citizens and businesses wherever they are in the world, while The Department for Business, Energy and International Strategy (BEIS) is focussed on building an economy that supports every member of society, and maximising investment opportunities for the UK. There are inevitably points in which our work overlaps, and one such example is our shared goal of ensuring the UK has secure, clean, low-cost energy for the future. In order to meet this important goal, we have devised a joint initiative known as the International Energy Unit (IEU) – and it is here that you will play an instrumental role in shaping our understanding of the energy sector.
In this highly varied role, you will support the Government’s international energy work and strategy. As an experienced energy professional with an exceptional understanding of the international energy sector, you will report to Ministers from both departments, providing policy advice and sharing expert analysis on projects all over the world. Travelling to FCO’s overseas network of staff in diplomatic posts in Embassies and High Commissions, you will help our worldwide team understand emerging trends in global energy, and how this will impact on the UK’s goals and our climate diplomacy work. You will also present to external audiences, representing the UK’s commercial objectives. As you will be expected to keep FCO and BEIS abreast of current technological and strategic developments in the energy sector, you will need to build and maintain relationships with key contacts in business and academia, identifying scope for commercial opportunities and actively filling gaps in your knowledge.
With the willingness to travel according to the needs of the role, you will excel in our team if you have comprehensive energy sector knowledge with considerable senior management experience.
Capable of making effective decisions and delivering at pace, you will be able to analyse technical energy issues and the geo-political implications of any potential policy and commercial decisions we make. With good verbal and written communication skills, you will have the capacity to present to, and interact with senior-level audiences including Ministers. Capable of seeing the bigger picture at all times, you will be a team-player. To apply for the role, you must also be a British citizen, and you will be willing to undergo high level (Developed Vetting) security clearance.
This is a role that can work around your other life and home commitments. While you need to be in the office for three days a week, you can pick which days that you work – so a good work/life balance is guaranteed. Furthermore, you will experience the type of networking and development opportunities that only a position of this magnitude could offer, and you will enjoy the full support of forward-thinking colleagues who are keen to support one another’s individual challenges. With a generous benefits package that includes access to our desirable civil service pension schemes, this is a role that offers the chance to do something career-defining with your expertise – while simultaneously bolstering UK business opportunities.
