Senior Advisor, Radioactive Substances Regulation

Environment Agency

£55,740 (pay award pending)

Locations: Preston, Penrith, Bristol (or flexible)

The Environment Agency is an independent organisation that sits within the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). As a regulatory authority that oversees issues affecting land, water and biodiversity, we work towards the common goal of protecting and improving England’s environment.

We are responsible for regulating for the proper protection of people and the environment. This includes the regulation of those industries across England which use and dispose of radioactive substances, both within the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors.

We're looking for three people to join our Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) teams, and as a key member of these teams you will join either:

  • The Advanced Nuclear Technologies and Future RSR Strategy Team, where you will be involved in setting our approach for the future regulation of Advanced Nuclear Technologies (ANT) and coordination of our international activities; or
  • The RSR Legacy & Waste Team where you will be involved in setting our approach to the decommissioning and clean-up of legacy nuclear and non-nuclear sites, including supporting our work to implement changes to legislation and our regulatory arrangements to enable the optimisation of waste management and delivery of site end states; or,
  • the New and Operational Sites Team where you will be involved in enabling the deployment of new nuclear power generation in line with Government policy, strategy and legislative requirements, while ensuring high standards of environmental protection.

Across all roles, you will provide expert analysis and advice to those working in the industry, colleagues within the EA, the wider Government and other regulatory authorities.

You will have significant experience of working in the environmental or relevant industry sector and a comprehensive awareness of the challenges faced by the industry.  You will have a thorough understanding of UK and EU radioactive substances regulation and related government policies and strategies.  With outstanding communication skills, you will have the capacity to negotiate with and influence global colleagues and contacts.  You will ideally have professional membership of a relevant body.

With the scope to shape the future of regulation within the field of radioactive substances, this is a unique opportunity to take your career to the next level. Further enhanced by a desirable pension scheme, generous annual leave and a solid work/life balance, the Environment Agency offers the chance to do something exceptional with your career.
