Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO)

Sustainability Director

About us

Scottish salmon is Scotland’s (and the UK’s) top food export, with a global reputation for quality. The industry is an important contributor to the UK economy and supports over 10,000 jobs in Scotland and across the UK supply chain, from Shetland to Heathrow.

The Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) is a membership organisation which seeks to positively influence the business environment, both UK and overseas and abroad, in which the Scottish Salmon farming industry operates.

The role

The Sustainability Director is a newly created role as part of SSPO’s senior leadership team, reporting to the Chief Executive. The Sustainability Director will lead a small team tasked with driving industry best-practice, primarily regarding continued excellence in fish farming, fish health and other production practices throughout the supply chain.

In addition, the successful candidate will also develop and coordinate an industry sustainability strategy that aims to ensure an operating environment which is conducive to industry growth and resilience. This will include playing a role in assessing and helping to minimise the impact of Brexit on the sector.

The Sustainability Director will drive and co-ordinate the SSPO’s programmes in:

  • Industry best-practice farming and fish health excellence
  • Protecting and enhancing the natural environment and biodiversity
  • Delivery of the 2030 Ambition, 10 year Farmed Fish Health Framework and other industry initiatives
  • Planning, regulatory and compliance matters
  • Data collection, analysis and reporting (and transparency of production and farming practice / data)
  • Supply chain, infrastructure and connectivity
  • Fish farming as a career of choice and the skills needs of the industry
  • Retail, consumer and nutrition matters
  • Identifying and supporting industry research needs

Alongside ensuring effective engagement with the industry on the above issues, the Sustainability Director will ensure the successful delivery of routine technical co-ordination / support for SSPO’s members, as well as the collection and publication of appropriate fish health, technical and sustainability data.

Required experience, skills and qualities

The successful candidate will:

  • Have proven experience of operating successfully at senior corporate and institutional level, with evidence of team development and people management.
  • Be results focussed and, with the support of the industry and team, deliver on industry-wide commitments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to influence key stakeholders, develop positive relationships and build trust and credibility. They must have the capability to manage important business relationships with regulators, government officials, supply chain organisations (and individuals) and other relevant interest groups.
  • Be confident communicating and influencing senior stakeholders up to Government Ministerial level in Westminster and Holyrood on regulatory, technical and more general issues of relevance to the salmon farming industry.
  • Possess excellent communications skills and be comfortable presenting to a range of audiences of varying sizes and seniority. They will be prepared to support SSPO media activity (training would be offered) and have a clear and concise communication style.
  • Be flexible in approach and willing to take on other projects as the industry and external agenda evolves.

A knowledge of the aquaculture industry would be highly advantageous. Experience with the salmon farming industry / UK food and drink sector and its regulatory environment and supply chain would also be beneficial, but not essential.
