Air Quality / Environmental Consultant
Cambridge is seeking to recruit a new full-time Consultant.
CERC is the developer of the widely-used Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling System, ADMS. The company employs around 25 staff. The consultancy team consists of three core staff reporting to CERC’s Consultancy Manager. Consultants call on the expertise of software developers and other technical staff, as necessary.
As a Consultant at CERC, your responsibilities will fall into two main areas:
- Consultancy projects; and
- Software support and training.
CERC’s consultancy projects can be highly technical. They involve the application of computer models, Geographical Information System (GIS) and other software to the investigation of air quality impacts due to industrial or road traffic emissions. We also apply our problem-solving skills and experience to other challenges, such as wind flow and research to inform government policy. Projects may call for complex data manipulations in Microsoft Excel, utilising macros written in VBA.
Projects range from two‑week assessments of industrial emissions, through six-month studies to compile detailed emissions inventories, to multi-year research projects. Although CERC is UK based, a significant percentage of our projects originate overseas.
Our clients include: industry; local and national government; environmental regulators; planners; and other consultancies. Each has different requirements and priorities, and you will work in close communication with them to ensure that their individual needs are met.
CERC’s software support is centred on our highly-acclaimed model helpdesk service, provided by telephone, email and at model User Group Meetings. You will soon start to contribute to this service, and you will attend a ‘training for trainers’ course, to support you in giving external presentations and training courses in the use of CERC’s software.
As a new starter, you will be supported in gaining experience in different types of consultancy projects, with increasing complexity and level of responsibility. You will be given formal training by attending CERC’s training courses. Your progress will be reviewed periodically, with a formal review on an annual basis.
You will have a strong background in physical science (e.g. physics, engineering, chemistry, meteorology, maths) at graduate level or higher. You will have demonstrated an ability to work in a well‑organised and conscientious way, and to meet challenging deadlines. You will offer problem‑solving and technical writing skills, and be able to build confidence in dealing with customers and promoting consultancy business. Your role may involve a degree of travel in the UK and overseas. Any experience you have with Excel VBA and/or ArcGIS will be advantageous. Consultancy experience is not essential.
Your salary is likely to be in the range £26,500 to £32,000, depending on your qualifications/skills and experience, and will be reviewed annually. You will be entitled to 25 days holiday per year, in addition to public holidays. In order to make sure that you and the position are a good match, you will initially be employed on a three-month probationary period.
