We’re looking for a number of enthusiastic permitting officers to join one of our National Permitting Service’s regulated industry teams based in Bristol, Warrington or Nottingham.
You’ll assess applications for a range of environmental permits located across England, carrying out technical assessment according to Environment Agency processes and regulatory obligations. Setting appropriate standards during the permitting process, you will enable business to operate while protecting and improving air, water and land quality.
You’ll pro-actively manage your own workload, seeking support and escalating issues as appropriate, to deliver high quality environmental permitting decisions to tight deadlines. To achieve this, you’ll have excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external customers. You must be prepared to have difficult conversations with your customers and be able to clearly explain your decisions. You’ll also provide mentoring and coaching support to others.

The National Permitting Service delivers the Environment Agency’s permitting and regulatory responsibilities, enabling businesses to operate whilst protecting the environment.
You’ll be joining an established permitting team, who determine environmental permit applications for regulated industry, such as waste, landfill, chemicals, refineries, combustion, intensive farming, food and drink.
However, you will need to remain flexible to respond to changing demands.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS REQUIRED
You’ll be expected to have the following:
- technical knowledge of at least one of the following: hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, biowaste, deposit for recovery, chemicals, combustion, landfill, refineries, metals, intensive farming, food and drink, cement and lime, paper and pulp, incineration, oil and gas, noise, odour, dust, air quality, habitats, fire prevention plans, best available techniques (BAT);
- experience in environmental management and environmental risk assessment;
- a degree (or equivalent) in a science or humanities subject
- excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide first-rate customer service;
- an ability to make sound and timely decisions;
- excellent planning skills;
- an ability to work effectively with others;
- mentoring and coaching skills.
The following would also be desirable:
- experience of environmental permitting such as providing pre-application advice, assessing applications, regulating against permits, reviewing permits;
- chartered membership of a relevant institute or Practising Environmental Regulator (or working towards this).
Please note that these roles will primarily be office based, although infrequent travel will be required to attend meetings and / or training.
