This is an interesting role that will be responsible for the C02 emissions accounting and auditing for Drax Power, in our industry these statistics are vital to the success of the company therefore we are looking for someone who is passionate, naturally strong at communicating and someone who is a good influencer.

This role would suit a graduate with some relevant work experience in emissions accounting/reporting, perhaps in a consulting environment who wants to move to an organisation that is striving for best practice, market leading in sustainable power generation and who can offer a role with development, profile and the opportunity to effect change.

As an Assistant Environmental offer you will be key in checking that data for CO2 emissions are accurately calculated so that they can be verified effectively by a third party certification bodies. In the absence of this role, Drax would not be able to fulfil its statutory obligations under the Greenhouse Gas Permit and other legal obligations associated with environmental regulations. This is a specialist technical role within the organisation in a small and specialist team.


  • There will be a requirement to communicate with a range of staff from across the company to encourage timely provision of data and ensure that the business remains compliant with statutory obligations.
  • The role is responsible for the co-ordination of a compliant management system and for the provision of accurate data. Penalties to the company for non-compliance have the potential to be very significant (£ millions). Budgetary responsibilities for this role will be limited to the low £ thousands, mainly for Permit subsistence, variations and third party verification fees. The accurate reporting of CO2 data is critical and can incur significant penalties for inaccurate reporting (up to €100 per tonne)
  • The role will include a significant amount of frequent data collection and internal verification throughout the year, including at least two external verification visits per year, each lasting about one working week.
  • There are no subordinate staff to this role.
  • Key outcomes from this role include the successful external verification of the greenhouse gas management system and data and timely reporting of data and statutory returns.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Formulate fuel use and fuel characteristic figures each month in order to provide a calculation of CO2 emissions data for use by the business.
  • Co-ordinate the management system throughout the year to ensure that business changes are adequately captured in order to provide confidence in the CO2 emissions figures at any point in the year.
  • Identify and actively question anomalies in data in order to identify and rectify any errors at the earliest opportunity.
  • Manage the internal and external audit processes associated with CO2 emissions to ensure that data are accurate and fit for purpose for submission to the UK Government and the European Commission.
  • Ensure that operations at the power station are compliant with the Greenhouse Gas Permit and that any changes in the business are reflected through timely permit variations in order to maintain compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Influence industry bodies and Regulators in order to ensure the most efficient route for Drax for compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Involvement in general Environmental Management as and when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

  • Educated to degree level in a scientific or engineering discipline, or relevant experience.
  • Experience in verification of large quantities of data and questioning anomalies.
  • Understanding of the key principles of management systems and maintenance of systems designed to provide reliable data.
  • Ability to engage with a large range of staff across the business and to drive the timely provision of data to feed into the emissions calculations.
  • Confidence to carry out internal audits and to manage external audits of data and management systems.
  • Ability to see opportunities for continual improvement in systems and processes used to derive data.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and to use initiative to tackle issues that arise.
