Job Summary:

Our client, a leading international multidisciplinary consultancy, is looking to appoint a Principal or Associate Director of Ornithology to become the technical lead for ornithology projects across the UK.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track record in providing high quality technical advice and support to the delivery of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and associated Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRAs) for terrestrial and sea bird species. You will play a key role in developing a specialist ornithology analysis, assessment and HRA team and have the opportunity to lead on a range of projects in the offshore renewables, coastal and marine infrastructure sectors.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
  • Provide expert ornithology advice and analysis as required to clients and colleagues
  • Develop survey specifications, procure survey contractors and review survey outputs
  • Prepare, manage and review technical analysis, EIA, HRA and other assessments relating to terrestrial and sea bird species
  • Lead and assist with the preparation of proposals and tenders and manage client accounts
  • Develop a strategic business plan and recruit, manage and develop a team of ornithologists
  • Represent and promote the company both domestically and internationally through the preparation of literature, attending meetings, conferences, exhibitions and workshops
  • Travel within the UK and occasionally abroad

Qualifications / Experience:
  • MSc and BSc in a related discipline (or equivalent level qualification)
  • IEMA (or equivalent) membership and Chartered Ecologist status
  • Substantial experience in technical ornithology data gathering, analysis and impact assessment
  • Demonstrable ornithological EIA and HRA experience
  • Solid understanding of environmental law, EIA guidelines and relevant local/ national policy
  • Sound knowledge of both marine and terrestrial environment
  • Previous experience of renewable energy projects would be desirable
  • Financial management and administration experience
  • Excellent communication, organisation, team management and time management skills
