Permitting Officer
Solihull
£24,280 - £27,090 per annum
About us
The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. Join us as a Permitting Officer and you’ll play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.
The role
Our National Permitting Service in Solihull plays an essential role in enabling sustainable business growth while protecting the environment. We assess permit applications to enable sustainable environmental protection in line with appropriate legislation and our own policies and procedures. The process is rigorous and detailed – it has to be – and the scope and scale of the permits we work on varies enormously, across a broad range of regulated industries from food and drink manufactures, to chemical works, to oil refineries.
Joining the team, you’ll carry out detailed technical assessments of applications, as well as advise and guide customers and colleagues across the organisation. You’ll manage every part of the assessment, from initial contact with the customer all the way through to making a final decision. As well as working with national bodies including local authorities, Natural England, The Health Protection Agency and the Health & Safety Executive, you’ll also have direct contact with members of the public and other stakeholders.
For the first few months you’ll be based at our office in Olton Court, Solihull. You’ll then move to Sapphire East, our Regional Office in the centre of Solihull.
About you
You should have a degree (or equivalent qualification) in a science or engineering subject, coupled with a good knowledge of the environment. You’ll be organised, methodical and detail conscious too, with the confidence and clarity of mind to make informed decisions. Clear communications skills are a must, as is the ability to build strong working relationships with customers and stakeholders. It’s also important that you’re good at managing your time, someone who enjoys delivering a number of tasks at the same time.
In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We’re committed to your continued professional development and you will have the opportunity to further develop your skills, expertise and career in this fast-paced, ever-evolving environment.
