Two of the UKs leading contaminated land and remediation consultancies/contractors are currently looking to expand their offices in various locations throughout the UK. Due to an influx of work both organisations require the services of additional environmental scientists/project managers.
Reporting to a Senior Manager, candidates will be required to co-ordinate site work set by senior staff (with a set budget) and assist in preparation of cost proposals. This will include supervising the investigation of potentially contaminated land and pollution incidents, for example oil spills at domestic properties and remediation of commercial sites.
Candidates will ideally have previous work experience as an Environmental Scientist with responsibilities for Phase I & II site investigations, as well as sound knowledge of scientific equipment for monitoring purposes. We would also require the applicants to have working knowledge of current regulations and guidance, drilling techniques and remediation strategies.
*Undertake Phase I and Phase II site investigations for contaminated sites and pollution incidents with reduced input from the Project Manager.
*Assist and carry out on-site remediation works with reduced input from the Project Manager.
*Carry out sampling in accordance with the proposal and soil logging activities according to current UK guidance and best practice.
*Prepare and send samples to accredited laboratories for physical and chemical analysis.
*Prepare reports (Phase I, Phase II and remediation), risk assessments and cost proposals under the supervision of the Project Manager.
*Liaise with clients, landowners, regulators, contractors, drilling, engineering teams and/or any other stakeholders involved in project.
*Perform project work effectively and within budget set at the start of the work within the proposal.
*Operate and understand scientific equipment with responsibility for the maintenance, calibration and up keep of the equipment.
*Carry out short and long-term monitoring of groundwater contamination plumes through sampling from boreholes and rivers and using scientific equipment to monitor different parameters and interpret data.
*Carry out short and long-term monitoring of remediation/treatment systems.
*Basic troubleshooting of remediation/treatment systems to ensure effective running and prevent unnecessary down time.
*Interpret technical data as well as using specific software which includes Holebase (logging software), AutoCAD and surfer.
*Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of developments in the contaminated land sector contributing to continued professional development.
*General day to day running and co-ordination of projects. Duties may include procurement of equipment, materials and sub contractors, execution of project health & safety requirements, delegation of tasks to project team, site supervision of contractors & internal staff and on-site sampling & monitoring.
*Maintaining a level of responsibility and duty of care towards health & safety as outlined in the Roles & Responsibilities document (IMS Manual).
Skills / Attributes
*Proven ability to communicate well at all levels to include effective client and regulator liaison.
*Proven organisation and prioritisation skills.
*Strong attention to detail.
*Good report writing skills.
*Proven experience as an Environmental Scientist and ability to work independently (reduced input/supervision from Project Manager).
*Able to demonstrate monitoring and sampling techniques for contaminated land and groundwater.
*Knowledge of scientific equipment for monitoring purposes.
*Comprehensive experience in the area of Phase I and Phase II site investigations.
*Working knowledge of current regulations & guidance, drilling techniques and remediation strategies.
*Working knowledge of software packages such as Surfer, Holebase, AutoCAD.
*A full UK/EC driving license is essential.
