Applied Environmental/Engineering Geologist
The British Geological Survey (BGS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the world's longest-established national geological survey and the UK’s premier centre for earth science information and expertise. The BGS programme comprises a wide-range of science projects that observe, monitor, analyze and model the geology of the UK landmass, helping society to respond to the challenges and opportunities of environmental change, population growth and economic regeneration. A vacancy has arisen for an Applied Environmental/Engineering Geologist to be based at our office in Cardiff. The appointment is for a three year fixed term, with the possibility of extension.
As a highly motivated and experienced scientist, you will play a key and pro-active role in the development and delivery of the BGS programmes in Wales. Reporting to the Chief Geologist, Wales, you will engage with government, regulators, research institutions and industry to develop partnerships and secure funding opportunities, to deliver a programme of national good geoscience in the area of regeneration and sustainable development, principally related to key city-regions in Wales. You must therefore have a good understanding of the relevant issues and challenges faced particularly in the UK, and the role of applied geoscience in addressing these.
You will already have experience of working on Engineering or Applied Environmental Geology projects in an urban setting. You will have excellent skills in project management and be able to deliver outcomes effectively. You will be able to demonstrate how your science plays a vital role in the development of practical solutions. You will be able to communicate your ideas effectively in a variety of ways to scientists, decision makers and funding bodies.
You should be educated to 2:1 degree level in geology or closely related geoscience subject and have an MSc/PhD in Applied Environmental or Engineering Geology (or directly related applied geoscience discipline). In addition you must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The post involves teamworking, therefore you should be able to demonstrate that you can work effectively with others, in a leadership role when necessary. Although the post will be based in Cardiff, you should expect to work away for periods of time, either undertaking fieldwork or working at other BGS sites.
Starting salary will be between £26,180 per annum and £29,410 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
