About us

The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. Join our Pollution, Prevention and Control (PPC) team in the Midlands, East Area, and you can play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

The role

We’re changing the way we deliver regulation and compliance and you’ll be at the forefront of our Future Approach to Regulation. Your remit will be wide-ranging and far-reaching, as you help us to regulate some of the most significant industrial sites in England such as Steel works, power stations, cement kilns, incinerators and complex waste management sites. You’ll audit industrial sites to make sure that they comply with permitted arrangements. You’ll carry out complex assessments of their ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution, and optimise the use of resources. We’ll give you the autonomy you need to manage your own work plans, but you’ll need to be quick to react to changing priorities and situations. We will also look to you to promote and champion best practice to senior managers and key stakeholders within industry, local communities and other interested groups.

About you

Methodical and pragmatic and solutions-focused, you’re an environmental professional, someone who understands industry and the need for robust environmental management. Alongside a degree (or equivalent qualification) in science, environment studies or engineering, you’ll be able to draw on considerable operational experience. You may even have spent time working as - or with - a regulator. As well as being up-to-speed with environmental legislation and regulations, you must have practical experience of auditing, Environmental Management Systems and an understanding of how they can improve a company’s environmental performance. It’s also vital that you’re a clear, credible communicator, comfortable dealing with people from different organisations and backgrounds.

In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment.

Closing date: 21 September 2012.

We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

Diversity: it’s in our nature
