£30,460 to £40,157 per annum

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards provides advice and undertakes research on the human health effects from exposure to radiation, chemicals and poisons in the environment. The HPA is committed to assessing and reducing/preventing the public health impact of environmental hazards and collaborating with other agencies in developing multi-agency response strategies. Consequently the post will develop the non-infectious and environmental hazards aspects of health protection to develop, implement and monitor interventions.
The Environmental Hazards and Emergencies Department (EHE) is a multi-disciplinary Department with responsibility for supporting the NHS and others in responding to acute and chronic environmental chemical incidents, environmental health regulation, surveillance and research. You will work closely with the stakeholders in England and the devolved administrations part of a team providing specialist input to inform the development of authoritative public and environmental health risk assessments and investigations of both acute incidents such as chemical fires, spills and releases, as well as the public health implications of industrial emissions, waste management, contaminated land, etc.
You will also need a good understanding of environmental public health legislation and will be expected to prepare health protection advice to local applications made under the Environmental Permitting regime. You will have an academic qualification or equivalent experience to MSc level in an appropriate scientific or public health / health protection discipline and experience sufficient to undertake all aspects of research or health protection projects with minimal supervision. The ability to manage tight deadlines and have the ability to travel throughout the region and nationally and if required, internationally is required.
One post will be based at either the Nottingham or Newcastle office and one will be based at the Manchester office.
