PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE ROLE: Reporting into the Consulting Group Manager, the Senior Consultant will be responsible for the day-to-day management of environmental projects. Technical expertise to be applied to consultancy projects will principally be around planning but knowledge and experience of EIA will also be advantageous. It is anticipated that the greater part of this job will be concerned with project management, direction and delivery; with business development and client care as core roles. The scope of the role will include providing assistance with planning issues (particularly in relation to waste and minerals initiatives), input on environmental impact assessment projects in technical and project management terms and assistance with PPC and EMS initiatives as appropriate.
KEY PROJECTS/CLIENTS: The team are currently working on various Planning and EIA projects. Clients cover both the public and private sectors and projects include Planning Applications, EIA’s, and planning support for waste infrastructure projects, research and policy formation and support for regeneration projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES: TECHNICAL: Continue to develop technical expertise in planning and health issues alongside delivery of personal sales activity. Provide assistance to the technical and commercial managers within the planning, EIA and health sectors of the business. Provide strategic input into the growth and recruitment plans in this area as required. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Manage projects including costs, performance and spend against budget, quality, deadlines, delivery of reports, presentations and other deliverables. Review the progress of projects on a regular basis. Take responsibility for delivery to client needs. Mentor more junior consultants across the team and company to enhance their performance. Act as proposal manager and ensure consistent approach to tender preparation as instructed by commercial and technical directors. Ensure delivery of projects to meet client requirements. CLIENT CARE: Assist with development of business opportunities in the Midlands and Wales region around core areas of expertise (Planning, EIA and health). Ensure quality of service & client satisfaction. COMMERCIAL: Focus development on key areas where contribution can make the greatest difference (Planning, EIA and health) but with flexibility to pursue wider opportunities. Utilisation of self and more junior consultants to optimise employee development, customer satisfaction and profitability. TEAM WORKING: Work with technical and commercial managers for the Midlands and Wales region to ensure business opportunities are effectively identified and taken forward. Provide technical input on projects as required. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT: Mentor more junior members of staff. Provide input on recruitment and performance management as appropriate. Act as a role model to the team, providing leadership, support and constructive feedback. Help create an environment that enables team to perform strongly and individuals to meet their career aspirations. Support the Consulting Group Manager in developing and facilitating development/career plans for team members. Provides feedback to colleagues in a constructive manner. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Maintain financial awareness of current and future work prospects in the core areas of expertise within the Midlands & Wales region and a general understanding of the position company-wide.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS: • Educated to degree level in a relevant science, planning or engineering field (or equivalent or be able to demonstrate equivalent level of understanding). • Ideally a Chartered Member RTPI (or working towards) • Hold a full Driving Licence.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS: • Relevant experience of managing single and multi-disciplinary projects gained within a consultancy or a local authority is acceptable. • Must have waste planning experience ideally coupled with experience of EIA. • A track record in business development activities is desirable. • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills. • Project management skills. • An ability to develop business including client care.
