We are looking for a Radiochemist to manage the radiochemistry laboratory. Your role will be to conduct low level analyses (including gamma, 3H, 14C, 90Sr, 99Tc, 238,239,240Pu and 241Am) on a range of environmental sample types. You should be capable of developing new analytical techniques and preparing these for UKAS accreditation. You would also be expected to initiate and develop a radioecological research programme which complements the activities of other members of the radioecological section. You will prepare contract reports and radioecological publications for submission to refereed journals. Your duties will also include some staff management, site Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) and Technical Manager under UKAS accreditation. You will be expected to have an established research interest, and reputation (i.e. peer reviewed output), in an area of science complimentary to the existing skills of the section.
The successful applicant must have practical experience of working in a radioanalytical laboratory. You must be able to manage a laboratory and develop radiochemical techniques. Experience of a range of radioanalytical techniques (for beta and alpha emitters) is a requirement; knowledge of gamma analyses would be a benefit (although training could be given if required). You will have excellent oral & written communication skills, and experience of working in a team, as well as the initiative to make autonomous decisions as appropriate. The post holder will require effective time management skills along with the ability to attract research income to the section. Familiarity with IRR99 would be an advantage although training to enable you to conduct the role of site RPS will be provided. An understanding of quality control is essential and some experience of UKAS accreditation procedures would be beneficial.
The salary for this post is £29,800 progressing to £35,330 per annum. In addition we’ll support your career development and you’ll enjoy a rewards package that includes NERC’s public sector pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10.5 days’ public and privilege holiday per annum
