The Organisation

The International Hydropower Association (IHA), formed under the auspices of UNESCO in 1995, is a global non-profit organisation advancing hydropower’s role in meeting the world’s water and energy needs by:

championing continuous improvement and sustainable practices;

building consensus through strong partnerships with other stakeholders; and

driving initiatives to increase the contribution of renewable energy, especially hydropower.

The Association is governed by an international Board, comprising 24 officers and an Executive Director.

IHA work contributes to addressing sustainability concerns over water and energy, including the problems of climate change. IHA has consultative/observer status with the various United Nations programmes and international agencies working in these areas. For more information on IHA, see: www.hydropower.org

GHG Status of Freshwater Reservoirs

In collaboration with UNESCO, IHA is working on a project relating to the greenhouse gas (GHG) status of freshwater reservoirs. Work to date has focused on bringing together the scientific community (two UNESCO workshops), producing a scoping paper on the current methodologies and knowledge gaps, and the drafting of a project proposal for future coordinated research and improved understanding on the impact of reservoirs on natural GHG emissions. It will be the responsibility of the GHG Project Manager to take this initiative forward on behalf of IHA.

GHG Project Manager

This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated professional to contribute to an important climate-change issue. It is a multi-dimensional role, coordinating an international research effort. Work will involve close collaboration with a scientific forum established by UNESCO. The GHG Project Manager will steer the various project components, manage the knowledge base, and report on:

·         coordinated field measurements of carbon transport and GHG emissions,

·         methodology to assess reservoir impact on the natural carbon cycle,

·         empirical and process-based predictive modelling of reservoir impact, and

·         appropriate mitigation measures where necessary.

The GHG Project Manager will report to the IHA Executive Director, and the position will be based at the Association’s Central Office, which comprises a small, energetic team. Responsibilities will require international travel and an aptitude to work and organize matters independently. He/she will also help scope IHA’s broader initiatives on hydropower and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Skills and Experience

The GHG Project Manager will have the following experience and interests:

·         relevant post-graduate education and at least three years experience in the water sector;

·         understanding of reservoir hydrodynamics, limnology and general climate change science;

·         professional experience in project management, including the organization and coordination of meetings, fundraising, budgeting and accounting;

·         ability to be strategic and operate with diplomacy; to work independently and perform under pressure;

·         strong communication skills and sound written English;

·         awareness of policy development (sustainability/water/energy/climate change).

Location: The IHA Central Office is based in southwest London, about 30 minutes from the city centre.

Contract: Initial two year contract. Salary subject to candidate’s experience.

Applications: CV and letter of application describing why the post is of interest, and demonstrating that your skills and experience are consistent with the requirements. Please respond as soon as possible, and by 30 May 2008 at the latest, to:
