Remote Sensing Scientist Specialised In Atmospheric Gas Retrievals
Wallingford
The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.
The capabilities of Earth Observation (EO) to detect concentration fields of radiatively active gasses in the atmosphere are developing very fast. A new generation of satellites (OCO, ESA sentinel 4 & 5, NPOESS) will provide a step change in our ability to monitor changes atmospheric composition in time and space. CEH has an active programme of improving the description of the land surface in climate and earth system models as a means to better quantifying land surface/climate interactions. Remote retrievals of gas concentrations should make a significant contribution to this research. We are looking for a scientist to develop new EO derived atmospheric products for use in our studies of land/climate interactions, assess the value and investigate the use of new products as they become available from other EO teams and keep the EO team at CEH up to date on the EO technologies and instruments under development .
We would expect the successful candidate to be a graduate with either a PhD in a relevant subject and may have some post doctoral experience, or equivalent. We require a candidate with knowledge of UNIX and extensive experience in one or more programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C/C++ or IDL), an ability to use statistical procedures, time series analysis and spatial analysis. A knowledge and interest in Earth Observation would be essential while experience in atmospheric Earth Observation would be an advantage. Some interest in land surface processes and the details of climate models or interest in EO instrumentation would be desirable but not essential.
The salary for this post is in the range £22,670 to £27,990 per annum depending on skills. In addition we’ll support your career development and you’ll enjoy a rewards package that includes NERC’s public sector pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10.5 days’ public and privilege holiday per annum
