PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE ROLE:

Reporting into the Consulting Group Director, the Principle Consultant will be responsible for the day-to-day management of environmental projects. Technical expertise to be applied to consultancy projects will principally be around planning issues but knowledge and experience of EIA will also be advantageous. The Principle Consultant will take accountability for securing Planning and EIA opportunities and support and assist in initiatives to secure overall regional performance and profitability. This will be a full management and leadership role with associated delivery responsibility.

KEY PROJECTS/CLIENTS:

The team are currently working on various Planning and EIA projects . Clients cover both the public and private sectors and projects include Planning Applications, EIAs, planning support for waste infrastructure projects, research and policy formation and support for regeneration projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- TECHNICAL: Continue to develop technical expertise alongside delivery of personal sales activity. Provide company-wide leadership to develop the Planning and EIA services provided by the company. Provide strategic input into the growth and recruitment plans in this area. Act as a technical lead on a range of projects and proposals and communicate complex issues to colleagues and clients. Responsible for the technical work of less experienced consultants.

- PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Act in a Project Director capacity on most projects. Manage, direct and mentor more junior consultants across the team. Ensure delivery of project to meet client requirements.

- CLIENT CARE: Develop account management responsibility for at least four key clients. Work to develop business opportunities in Midlands and Wales around core areas of expertise (Planning and EIA). Take a leadership role for client and business development management. Ensure quality of service & client satisfaction.

- COMMERCIAL: Ensure that the Group and the services offered are appropriately positioned in the market and that new areas of business are constantly sought and developed. Focus development on key areas where contribution can make the greatest difference (Planning and EIA) but with flexibility to pursue wider opportunities to the overall commercial benefit of Enviros. Manage utilisation of self and more junior consultants to optimise employee development, customer satisfaction and profitability. Development of forecasts.

- TEAM WORKING: Support the Technical & Innovation Group representative in their role on driving forward the business opportunities across Enviros for Planning and EIA work by providing information on project status, business development opportunity and overall team performance and skills gaps. Work with other commercial managers for the Midlands and Wales region to ensure opportunities for joint-working are effectively identified and taken forward. Provide technical input on projects as required. Look to motivate and encourage the team.

- PEOPLE MANAGEMENT: Provide active leadership in the business including clear and regular communications to the team. Take mutual accountability for the performance of the region as a whole and support and assist in initiatives to secure overall regional performance and profitability. Provide input on recruitment and performance management as appropriate ensuring any involvement is undertaken in a timely and proactive manner. Act a role model to the team, providing leadership, support and constructive feedback. Create an environment that enables the team to perform strongly and individuals to meet their career aspirations. Develop and implement a results orientated environment where people are rewarded for their contribution to the business.

- FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Maintain financial awareness of current and future work prospects in the core areas of expertise within the Midlands & Wales region and a general understanding of the position company-wide.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

- Educated to degree level in a relevant subject i.e. planning or engineering field (or equivalent or be able to demonstrate equivalent level of understanding).

- Chartered Member RTPI (or working towards).

- Hold a full Driving Licence.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

- Considerable experience is required in the Planning sector gained either within a consultancy or local authority.

- Specific experience of submitting proofs of evidence for planning inquiries is desirable.

- Experience of managing multi-disciplinary projects going beyond one core technical area.

- Must have strong business development skills.

- Previously demonstrated man management experience.

- Some experience of P&L management and an understanding of basic financial metrics.

- A track record of client management.

- A good working knowledge of client terms and conditions of contract.

- Strong commitment to driving standards, developing skills and building capabilities across the business.

- Strong team working skills to achieve the overall business goals.

- Ability to inspire and influence others.
