Principal Environmental Scientist

Job Purpose

To provide technical leadership; to manage the technical delivery of the team’s services.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

B & I Management team, Geoenvironmental Team Leaders, Geotechnical Team leaders, relevant BV HS&E staff, Shared Services teams and the Office Manager.

RESPONSIBILTIES:

· Take responsibility for the overall technical direction of environmental business unit in Maidstone.

· Manage the team’s provision of technical services to clients.

· Prepare/review fee proposals issued by the team.

· Draft, or review/edit technical documents.

· Manage some individual project commissions.

· Liaise with clients, other professionals and members of the public, as required, during the carrying out of projects.

· Report on the performance of the team.

· Keep abreast of current legislation, relevant national and international standards and guidelines, and technical developments within the relevant field.

· Seek and secure new work, and liaise with other senior staff in the company to assist in the promotion of overall company services.

· Seek efficiency improvements in the delivery of services by the team.

· Contribute to the continuing evaluation of services offered by the company, to the refinement of those services and to development of new services.

· Chair and participate in team meetings

· Work with the Office Manager and Shared Services teams to ensure that suitable facilities and support systems are available.

· Follow the company procedures regarding quality, health & safety, commercial, financial management, environmental and human resources matters. Ensure similar compliance by all members of his/her team.

· Financial result of individual projects

· Compliance with health & safety and quality control systems

JOB HOLDER’S PROFILE:

· Degree qualified in relevant subject

· Proven and solid background with relevant experience in areas of contamination assessment and remediation, negotiating with regulators on behalf of clients, PPC surveys/compliance, and provision of EPA Pt 2A advice/support services to Local Authorities.

· Be an exemplar for technical direction, knowledge dissemination, etc within the environment team

· A recognised expert in contaminated land assessment, remediation

· Member of a related professional institution and, preferably, Chartered status.

· Sufficiently familiar with quantitative risk assessment models (CLEA, RBCA, P20, Consim) to be able to provide guidance to staff on their application

· Experienced in provision of consultancy services, Able to deliver services within budget and on time

· Strong communicator

· Strong commercial acumen

· Driving licence (with not more than 6 points preferred)

· Positive attitude towards implementing health & safety and quality control systems

SALARY & BENEFITS:

· £ 40-45 negotiable - depending on experience

· Company car or car user allowance

· 25 days holiday, plus public holidays

· Up to two professional subscriptions paid.

· Eligible to join the company’s contributory pension scheme (8% company / 4% employee) on satisfactory completion of probationary period.
