Our client is a hugely successful specialist consultancy with offices in London, and across the South East. Principal areas of work are as follows:  Habitat surveys – including Phase 1, extended Phase 1, Phase 2 and River Corridor Surveys.  Vegetation surveys – including National Vegetation Classification.  Protected species surveys – great crested newts, reptiles, bats, water voles, otters, badgers etc.  Fauna surveys, including terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, birds and mammals.  Ecological Assessment, including the design of mitigation measures for any identified impacts.  Preparation of site management plans and involvement with design and construction issues.  Undertaking ecological watching briefs and Clerk of Works roles for contractors.  Training in ecological issues and procedures.  Preparation of information and guidance materials.  Research on wildlife issues.  Expert witness role at Public Inquiries. 

The Senior Ecologist will be involved in all areas of our work but the emphasis will be on dealing with protected species issues. Manage a small team of ecologists undertaking, amongst other things, protected species surveys and assessments, and ecological Clerk of Works and Watching Brief roles on construction contracts. Be required to take on and manage individual contracts, in order to deliver high quality ecological consultancy services within budget and to meet deadlines. This may involve: liaising with clients, other consultants and consultees; acquiring data from third parties; organising and supervising sub-contractors and other staff; preparing maps and writing and editing reports. Assist with the general running of the Kent office, in co-operation with other staff. Help with the marketing and promotion of the company. The project-based nature of our work means that there will be a requirement to undertake such travel as is necessary to successfully carry out contracts. This may include overnight stays and, possibly, longer periods of working away from home. Person specification The Senior Ecologist will  Have an appropriate degree.  Be a Full Member of the IEEM.  Have relevant work experience.  Have excellent fieldwork and report writing skills.  Have experience and be proficient in Project Management.  Have a detailed knowledge of protected species legislation.  Have managed staff.  Have, ideally, expertise in bat ecology including being in possession of a roost visitor licence.  Have, in addition to the above, expertise in one or more of the following groups/species: herptiles, badgers, dormice, water voles or otters.  Experience in EIA and mitigation methodologies would also be advantageous.
