PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE ROLE:
The Senior Consultant will provide project support and management in the areas of waste strategy, recycling and composting and general waste management. This will involve managing projects across the company from strategic work for local authorities to providing waste management advice to waste management companies.
KEY PROJECTS/CLIENTS:
The client and project portfolio will be varied and will cover both the public and private sectors. It currently includes DEFRA NISP work, DEFRA WasteDataFlow, WRAP Rotate Projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• TECHNICAL: Offer and deliver technical solutions to meet the business and client expectations. Maintain and develop waste expertise and continue to increase technical breadth. Will act as a technical lead on a range of projects and proposals and communicate complex issues to colleagues and clients. Responsible for the technical work of less experienced consultants.
• PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Will manage projects including costs, performance and spend against budget, quality, deadlines, delivery of reports, presentations and other deliverables. Review the progress of the project on a regular basis and take responsibility for delivery to client needs. Resolve technical and financial queries through consultation with project managers and technical managers where appropriate. Devise or select the most appropriate method of project delivery by considering implications. Prioritise work, define and allocate tasks, regularly communicate and provide updates and direction by regularly meeting with the project team. Will Identify shortfalls and allocate employees to available work ensuring that tasks meet employee development needs.
• CLIENT CARE: Responsible for client care as required on projects (under instruction from the project director and manager) including communication of progress, complex issues and any financial arrangements. Ensure projects delivered are meeting the client’s needs.
• COMMERCIAL: Maintain senior level client contacts and negotiates and agrees commercial terms where appropriate, consulting with Project Managers on large scale projects. Support the Consulting Group Manager in the annual budgeting and planning process. Develop an awareness of customer business issues and identifies lead generation. Proactively seeks business development opportunities and develops these under guidance from Commercial Managers and Directors where appropriate. Involves less experienced employees in the process where relevant. Take accountability for own performance and achieve contribution target when set.
• TEAMWORKING: Encourage and motivate the team by supporting the Consulting Group Manager at team meetings. Support the Consulting Group Manager by clearly communicating progress, employee performance targets and the necessary actions required. Demonstrates commitment to the team by displaying a personal commitment and positive attitude at all times and acts as an ambassador for teamwork.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
• Educated to degree level (or equivalent or be able to demonstrate equivalent level of understanding) in a relevant discipline.
• Ideally hold membership of a professional institution however this is not essential.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
• Relevant experience gained within either a consultancy or Local Authority.
• Knowledge should include waste strategy, waste management, recycling or composting.
• Proven report writing, data manipulation, numeracy and communications skills are essential.
• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Sound project management as well as business development skills including client care.
• A flexible attitude, positive outlook and attention to detail are essential, along with an ability to work to tight deadlines.
• Current driving licence
