Our Client is in an exciting period of growth in the environmental sector. They are looking to recruit high quality individuals to support our existing services in brownfield regeneration in several UK offices.

An immediate vacancy exists in a busy Birmingham office for a principal to develop and lead a contaminated land team. The person is likely to be already employed by a leading specialist environmental consulting company and conversant with site work, risk assessment, scoping and pricing investigations, project management, developing remediation strategies and writing high quality interpretative reports. The successful candidate must demonstrate leadership, team working, good communication and client facing skills and a good understanding of relevant legislation and regulations. The candidate must be eager to develop a well rounded career encompassing both technical and business aspects.

The Team Leader will help to recruit and grow a contaminated land team to work closely with geotechnical engineers and environmental scientists. The right candidate will have an established client base and will be required to develop and own a Business Case for this role. In this regard, you will be involved in bidding tenders and supporting bids in other offices, marketing and selling as well as Project Managing. Projects will include Phase 1 and Phase 2 contaminated land site investigations and assessments, PPC applications or landfill closure audits, contributions to ES/SEA and planning advice to Local Authorities and developers.

As the Team Manager you will organise and write the briefs for your own team members as well as other Technical Experts that may be required to contribute to projects from our National team which includes hydrogeology, waste, application of the PART IIA regime, risk assessment, remediation, environmental impact, ecology etc. You will be responsible for recruitment, sales and marketing and project delivery approval. Your immediate line manager will be the Environmental Solutions Function Group Manager.

Specifically the role will involve:

- Leadership and development of the skills and resources of the existing contaminated land team to meet the needs and demands of this continually changing area, including training, workshops, acquisition of appropriate software and literature, and keeping the team abreast of the latest legislation, regulations and associated guidelines.

- Provide technical leadership in developing and up-dating Hyder’s risk assessment methods, in line with best practise, for both generic and detailed quantitative risk assessment. Including identifying training and resource (software and literature) to support this.

- Ensure quality assurance and quality control of project deliverables.

- Ensure projects are delivered to budget.

- Where necessary develop additional standard operating procedures (SOPs) and report templates for reporting GQRA, DQRA Risk evaluation etc., including standardised basic requirements for data input for risk assessments, plus additional methods for the more advanced works we have experience of i.e. bioaccessibility testing, cropping trials, CISED testing etc.

- Provide support including project direction, undertaking, checking and approval of risk assessments and interpretative reports across the business, as required.

- Business development through marketing and sales and mentoring PM’s in sales.

- Bidding

- Develop marketing literature to publicise contaminated land and environmental risk assessment capability.

- Develop research and development opportunities to allow our knowledge base and profile to be raised.

- Attend conferences and feed back information to risk assessment team.

- Present / author papers at conferences and in peer review journal and industry literature.
